Succession, deceased users and family disputes

A Table can outlive the person who started it. This policy explains how a Table passes on, and how we respond when family members disagree.

Nominating a successor

A Keeper can nominate a successor at any time: someone who will look after the Table if the Keeper can't. The successor doesn't need an account. The Keeper can change or withdraw the nomination whenever they like.

When a Keeper dies or can no longer look after the Table

1. The nominated successor, or another member of the Table, contacts us through the contact page.
2. We ask for reasonable evidence, such as a death notice, a death certificate, or a letter from a lawyer or medical professional.
3. We tell the Table's members and give them time to raise any concerns.
4. The successor becomes the Keeper. Nothing in the Table is deleted, and the history of who kept it stays as it was ("kept by Ania, 2024").

If there is no nominated successor, we will normally invite the longest-standing active Contributor to become Keeper, after the same checks.

When an account holder dies

Their contributions stay in the Tables they were part of, still attributed to them. A family member can ask us to close the account, and can export what they are allowed to see.

Requests about a person who has died

Relatives sometimes ask for information about someone who has died to be changed or removed. We listen respectfully, consider the wishes of the person who died where known, the wider family's interest in preserving their memory, and the law of the relevant country. We explain our decision.

Family disputes

We don't decide whose memory of a family is right. When members disagree:

• Memories belong to the person who wrote them. Only they can edit them; others can reply.
• The Keeper can lower the visibility of items in their Table, for example during a dispute, but can't make someone else's private item more visible.
• Leaving a Table never removes what you contributed. If you want your own contributions removed, you can ask; see our Privacy Policy.
• If a dispute can't be resolved within the family, contact us. We may temporarily restrict changes to the items in question while we look into it.
